Why SeaCMD?

In light of the rising Southeast Asia in the centre of knowledge production, the Department of International Relations, the University of Mataram seeks to explore more wide-ranging topics of migration and development. Therefore, we plan to organize Southeast Asian Conference on Migration and Development (SeaCMD), which will take place on Lombok Island of West Nusa Tenggara Province in Indonesia. We encourage a broad range of scholars including researchers, lecturers, policymakers, research consultants, and postgraduate scholars to share their ongoing research or promote their past papers at this conference. Scholars from various disciplines are also encouraged to apply.

Keynote Speakers

Prof. Dr. Jun Honna

Dr. Jun Honna is a full professor of International Relations at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan. He is an area studies scholar as well as political scientist specializing in Southeast Asia. Aside from engaging with the literature of military and politics, Dr. Honna also focuses on the issue of human security, maritime cooperation, and societal development in Southeast Asia and Japan. He has been a regular author for Indonesia, a historic journal published by Cornell University, as well as other internationally reputable journals. In SeaCMD, Dr. Honna will update us about human security and development issues in Southeast and East Asia.


Prof. Dr. Johan Lindquist

Dr. Johan Lindquist is a full professor of social anthropology as well as the Director of the Forum for Asian Studies at Stockholm University. During the spring of 2020 he was a Fellow at the Stockholm Centre for Organisational Research (SCORE) and a visiting scholar in the School of Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam, and during 2021 a Visiting Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology. He has previously been a visiting scholar at Harvard and Cornell and a visiting professor at the Asia Research Institute at the National University of Singapore. For SeaCMD, Dr. Lindquist will talk about current issues and debates on migration studies in Southeast Asia, and would also hear his suggestions for early stage academia for studying migration in Southeast Asia.


Dr. Lucy Jordan

Dr. Jordan is an associate professor at the Department of Social Work and Social Administration, the University of Hong Kong. has been focusing her research on the long-term impact of parental migration on the health and well-being of families and children who remain in countries of origin, more specifically within the Southeast Asian Region. She has been extensively published in in social work and interdisciplinary social science journals. Dr. Jordan is also a senior research consultant for various international organizations. For SeaCMD, Dr. Jordan will share her research about the current debates on transnational family studies, which focus on cases in Southeast Asian countries.


Dr. Riwanto Tirtosudarmo

Dr. Tirtosudarmo is a well-known Indonesian political demographer. He spent most of his career as a researcher at the Research Center for Society and Culture, the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (PMB-LIPI). He has extensively published both scholarly and popular articles and books on topics such as political demography and the politics of migration in Indonesia. In SeaCMD, Dr. Tirtosudarmo will share with us the history of migration in Southeast Asia.
